Stress is one of the leading most complaints amongst women who are going through menopause. Stress causes us to feel worse and can also affect the friends and family members around us. It can disrupt our sleep and make us feel physically ill.
Stress is a common problem. Most people have stressful lives without having menopause added to the mix. Pair that with the sometimes painful and uncomfortable things going on in our bodies and you have a good reason to feel angry.
When we’re in puberty, we can’t wait to be fully grown. We start to think of ourselves as women early on and it isn’t until we are well into our 20’s that we can look back and chuckle at ourselves “back then”. When we’re young mothers we deal with our bodies changing. In fact, we are pregnant for 9 months and it can take 8 to 12 months for our bodies to revert back to normal after we have the baby, which means our bodies are all messed up for at least 16 months. If we have more than one child, that can equate to a few years out of our healthy adult life that we don’t feel normal.
After we grow out of puberty and grow up, we go merrily on our way. Some of us have children, some of us don’t. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter whether you do or don’t have children, menopause will be tapping on your shoulder sooner than you think.
It can be frustrating because we often think of older senior citizen women going through menopause. I remember watching the every-popular Golden Girls sitcom as I was growing up. Those women seemed so old to me. Yet when my own mother surpassed their supposed ages on the show, I simply couldn’t believe it.
The Golden Girls is an excellent example of what may happen to us as we get older. We live full lives as adults, raise our children and expect to relax. We continue on with life, going to work, maybe dating or getting out every now and again, and we expect the hard stuff to be over. Unfortunately, for many it’s just beginning. Because perimenopause carries most of the symptoms of menopause, we can have a 5, 10 or even 15 year road ahead of us.
That means that we’re possibly still raising our children, still working full time and still trying to be young, healthy and normal!
Some women are lucky enough not to experience serious symptoms, but if you are not, stress can drag you down. Insomnia, weight gain, bloating and headaches are all normal parts of menopause. Stress can also lead to the rest of that list, so learning to keep stress levels down, particularly during menopause, is very important. It’s important to our overall health and the sanity of ourselves and our loved ones who have to deal with us. Stress and hormonal changes can lead to mood swings, depression and anxiety. You should seek medical advice if you feel you are suffering from extreme menopausal stress.
