Mood swings is a very common complaint when it comes to menopause. Women who are going through menopause complain about it because they don’t understand what is happening to them or why they are acting a certain way. Friends and family members complain because they don’t understand what she’s going through or why she’s taking it out on them.
Many women suffer some mild to severe mood swings during menopause. There are those who believe these side effects of menopause are all in our heads and that we are just making more out of something than we have to. It’s easy for younger people and the opposite sex to assume that we are just crazy ranting and raving women.
Mood swings occur because of a combination of things that are going on with a woman’s body both physically and emotionally. First of all, we all know that hormonal imbalance is directly connected to mood swings, depression, anxiety and sleep. The whole point of menopause is that our bodies begin making less estrogen in order to stop ovulating so that we no longer can reproduce. This process can begin anywhere from age 35 to 60 and it varies from woman to woman.
Other side effects associated with menopause are nausea, headache, weight gain, water retention, depression and insomnia. It’s no wonder a woman experiencing some or all of these symptoms might suffer from mood swings! Often times our bodies let us down when we need them to be perfect. We get unexpected periods at school when we’re wearing white pants or on our honeymoons. Sometimes we want more than anything to be pregnant, but our monthly cycles just come swiftly each month no matter what we do. Perhaps fate is against us, who knows! What I do know is that you can’t count on your body to be perfect so that you can comfortably get something done, which means we need to stay one step ahead of ourselves.
If we’re experiencing mood swings and other symptoms related to menopause, there are treatment options out there. It’s a good idea to make a doctor’s appointment and have the appropriate tests completed to ensure that we truly are going through menopause and that we’re not having some other issue.
Once it is determined that we’re going through menopause, we need to discuss appropriate methods of treatment with our physician. There is also an array of alternative methods out there like taking herbal supplements, acupuncture, massage, Yoga and more. Whichever route you decide to take, make sure it’s working for you and know that you are not alone. Many women are experiencing the same things as you are. Find a support group or a friend who understands. Don’t keep it bottled in. If you are lucky enough to have a significant other in your life who understands, talk to him or her about what you’re going through and provide them with the appropriate information so they can have a clear understanding too.
