Vaginal dryness is a common complaint amongst menopausal women. Often times we may experience vaginal dryness and not understand why it’s happening to us or what we can do about it. Rest assured that vaginal dryness can happen to almost any woman and it’s a natural part of menopause.
Vaginal dryness is a common occurrence for women who are in menopause because of the disrupted hormonal balance their bodies are experiencing. Women often complain of dryness and sometimes pain during sexual intercourse. This can be embarrassing and frustrating, to say the least.
When a woman’s body goes into menopause, she has a decrease in estrogen as well as her cervix producing a significantly less amount of mucous, which is why her vagina might be providing less lubrication. The entry point into a woman’s vagina also becomes smaller, which can make entry more difficult. This, mixed with the lack of lubrication and hormonal difficulties is a recipe for disaster in the bedroom.
If this is a problem you find you and your partner are experiencing, my suggestion is to use vaginal lubrications. You might have to try different ones to find the one which is right for you. Don’t worry about having to go to a naughty store because most department stores and drug stores sell some very good vaginal lubricants. Unfortunately if you are planning to use a condom as a means of protection, lubricants are not recommended as they lower the effectiveness of the condom, thus raising the risk for pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
If you are not using condoms during sex, you can also try vegetable oil or unscented creams instead of the store bought vaginal lubricants. You may also try mineral oil or check online if making such a purchase in the store is an issue for you.
You may consider using an estrogen based cream prescribed by your physician. If you think this may help you, make a doctor’s appointment to discuss which treatment options are available to you and what might work best for your unique situation.
Believe it or not, estrogen isn’t the only hormone women are getting less of during menopause. Some women may need to replace testosterone in their bodies as well. Again, this is something you need to speak with your physician about to find out if this is something you need and whether or not it would work for you.
Last, but not least, women who are experiencing vaginal dryness can always practice Kegel’s exercises. Personally, I find it difficult and somewhat creepy, but many women find it incredibly helpful and if you’re looking to add some spice to the bedroom, Kegel’s exercises can definitely help you in that department too.
There are many different methods you can use to bring back your natural vaginal lubrication. Just keep in mind that it is a natural part of growing older as a woman and that it’s something which can be treated and dealt with. It doesn’t mean you can no longer have sex or that you need to send your sexual partner on his way. It just means you have something new to deal with.
