Medications To Relieve Menopause

There are several medications on the market which are used to treat and relieve menopause. Most of the medications have some sort of side effects and not all of them work for every woman. Knowing the difference in medications and understanding the side effects is the first step to finding a treatment option that will work best for you.

Premarin

Premarin is an estrogen replacement drug.  Premarin can be used to reduce symptoms of warm feelings in the neck, face and chest (known best as hot flashes).
 
Premarin tablets are described to teenagers who fail to mature at the expected rate.  It can also relieve certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and prostate cancer.  Premarin in tablet or vaginal cream form can be used for conditions caused by a lack of estrogen (dry, itchy and vaginal irritation).  Premarin tablets are also sometimes prescribed to prevent osteoporosis. 

Side Effects of Premarin

 - Breast pain
 - Gas
 - Headache
 - Hair loss
 - Mild nausea
 - Spotting or breakthrough bleeding
 - Stomach cramps
 - Bloating

Sertraline

The brand name of Sertraline is Zoloft and it is typically used to treat depression.  Sertraline is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.  It effects the chemicals in the brain, which may become unbalanced can cause depression, panic or anxiety, to name a few symptoms.

Side Effects of Sertraline

 - Anxiety
 - Constipation
 - Decreased sexual desire or ability
 - Diarrhea
 - Dizziness
 - Drowsiness
 - Dry Mouth
 - Increased Sweating
 - Loss of Appetite
 - Nausea
 - Nervousness
 - Stomach upset
 - Tiredness
 - Trouble Sleeping
 - Vomiting
 - Weight loss

Less Common Side effects of Sertraline

Server allergic reactions (itching, rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness of the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)

 - Bizarre behavior
 - Black or bloody stools
 - Chest pain
 - Decreased bladder control
 - Exaggerated reflexes
 - Fast or irregular heartbeat
 - Fever
 - Hallucinations
 - Loss of coordination
 - New or worsening agitation
 - Panic attacks
 - Aggressiveness
 - Impulsiveness
 - Irritability
 - Hostility
 - Exaggerated feeling of well-being
 - Restlessness
 - Persistent or severe ringing in the ears
 - Persistent painful erection
 - Red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin
 - Seizers
 - Severe or persistent anxiety
 - Stomach pain
 - Suicidal thoughts or attempts
 - Tremor
 - Unusual bruising or bleeding
 - Unusual or severe mental or mood changes
 - Vision changes
 - Worsening of depression

Clonidine

Clonidine can be taken in pill or patch form and is used to treat hot flashes.  An eight week study of post menopausal women who took Clonidine, there was a decrease in hot flashes.
 
Side Effects of Clonidine

 - Dizziness
 - Dry mouth
 - Constipation
 - Drowsiness
