Exercise For Relieving Menopause

Exercise is important no matter how old you are or what physical or emotional experience you’re going through. It can help with anti-aging, weight loss, depression and a lot of other physical and emotional issues.

weight trainningIt’s important to stay active and healthy our entire lives, but as we age and our bodies stop acting the way they used to, it becomes even more vital and important.  Believe it or not, regular exercise can relieve a lot of menopausal symptoms.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise, particularly if you’re keeping track of the number of steps you take in a day by using a pedometer.  Experts recommend walking at least 10,000 steps a day.  It’s interesting to see how many steps you actually take and keeping track can be a means of increasing your daily steps.

Jogging also has a lot of good health benefits, but it’s not for everyone.  I personally am not a jogger and tend to lean towards exercise I know I can do and won’t get bored with, like walking.  Having a walking buddy can be especially nice because it gives you a reason to get out of the house at a specific time or to a specific place.

Walking with a family member, friend or neighbor can be so helpful and therapeutic.  I remember walking with a neighbor and friend of mine when I was going through a nasty divorce.  Talking with her provided me relief away from the negativity of my life and had a very therapeutic affect on me because it allowed me to get my troubled thoughts out and hear the prospective of someone who was directly involved.

Swimming can also be a fun activity in the summertime or if you have access to a gym with an indoor swimming pool.  If you’re not much of a swimmer, you can opt to do water aerobics instead.  You can join a free or inexpensive class or you can simply “water walk” up and down the lanes.  Some gyms offer a child free time in the mornings or evenings, which means you’ll be able to work out in the water without being disrupted or having to share your swim lane with a loud, splashing child.

Weight lifting and other strength training exercises can also be very beneficial.  Exercise helps combat the side effect some people have of weight gain.  It can also help with water retention, headaches and feelings of depression.

Exercise alone may not be enough to combat the symptoms of menopause.  You may need to combine regular exercise with diet, supplements or medications.  If the treatment options aren’t working, make an appointment with your doctor to go over other treatment options which may be available to you.
