Does eating better really help us if we’re going through menopause late in life? Can it prevent symptoms from being worse than they have to? These are very good questions. Women expect to go through menopause, but when it happens late, it tends to be worrisome.
Eating a balanced diet and going back to the roots of the food groups and the food pyramid can be a big help to someone who’s going through late menopause (or menopause at any time, for that matter).
Living a healthy lifestyle before menopause may help us experience less menopausal symptoms or to go through menopause later in life, which has its pros and cons. Though women who go through menopause later in life are at a higher risk for certain types of cancers, you are lower risks for many other diseases and medical problems.
There are many menopausal symptoms which can be kept under control by eating the right foods.
Reducing your intake of coffee, tea, alcohol, colas and spicy food can help reduce hot flashes. Women experiencing hot flashes should also try to reduce their intake of refined sugars.
Bagels, sandwiches and whole grains have the power to fight mood swings in menopausal women. Opt for a bowl of cereal for lunch or dinner and you may notice a difference in your mood fluctuations.
Weight gain is another issue for women who are in any stage of menopause. Try avoiding frying your food and cook with canola or olive oil whenever possible.
Increase the amount of water you’re drinking if you’re not already getting the recommended daily consumption of six to eight glasses a day.
As with any medical issues, diet plays a huge role in treatment and prevention. You need to watch what you’re putting into your body because it can directly affect you in ways you may not even be aware of.
Eating a diet high in natural fiber (found in green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits) is extremely important for keeping your body running properly. You can implement supplements with your diet and exercise regimen too for an even better result.
Go for lots of dairy, but make sure it’s low fat or fat free. Avoid processed foods and foods which are high in fat and calories. Don’t starve yourself as these diets never work very well. They tend to do more damage than not.
Getting regular exercise is also key and I can’t emphasize it enough. It’s important to stay active somehow even if we’re not as active as we want to be.
If you experiences symptoms that are unbearable and difficult to deal with, you should speak to your doctor right away. There are many treatment options out there which can be very beneficial to your unique individual problems.
