Why Am I Acting This Way?

There are many jokes and laughs floating around online, on the television and in general conversation regarding menopausal women, but there is a science behind why we’re feeling and acting this way and it’s nothing to laugh at.

From the time our bodies begin the perimenopause all the way through menopause, we may experience uncomfortable feelings such as hot flashes, mood swings, depression, irregular periods, cramping, aches and other pain, weight gain and insomnia, just to name a few.  Perimenopause can start 10 to 15 years before menopause and menopausal symptoms can has for years.  Menopause means we have not had our period in at least 12 months.

Perimenopause has our periods becoming more and more irregular; some heavy, some light.  They may come more frequently or infrequently and may be shorter or last longer.  Menopause is the exact opposite of puberty and if you’re wondering why menopause lasts so long, consider how many years we spent growing from child to teenager and going through puberty until we were considered to be adults.  We spend almost 20 years as “children” or “teens” in a sense, so it’s safe to say it can take 20 years for our bodies to revert back.

The problem is that our bodies are not the same.  We’re more mature and have lived some sort of life which by now has affected our bodies, our health and our lifespan.  Menopause means our bodies are making less estrogen.  Eventually we stop producing eggs.  When we are younger and are having our monthly cycle, we produce an egg during ovulation.  When we start perimenopause, we don’t always produce an egg each month and eventually we stop all together and this is when we stop having our periods and we are considered to be in menopause.

People used to be under the impression that menopausal symptoms began with our ovaries.  This gave people the wrong impression that menopausal emotional symptoms were mainly in our heads.  More recent studies have proven that at least 50% of our symptoms begin in our brains.  It’s easy to consider emotional problems when we know that hormones are directly related to our emotions and the whole point of menopause is that our hormones are changing and are less.

That’s why hormone replacement therapy is an option for some women who are experiencing more severe menopausal symptoms.

The most important thing is to not beat yourself up too much.  Everyone wants to be perfect all the time and we all have times in our lives when we act or react a certain way we later wish we hadn’t.  It’s human nature for both men and women and it’s completely unavoidable if we plan to participate in day-to-day life.

Don’t let someone tell you that it’s all in your head or that you shouldn’t be acting the way you’re acting.  Know and understand that the symptoms you’re experiencing are normal for a lot of women.  It doesn’t make you less of a person.  It only means that your body is going through some changes and when it’s all done, you’ll feel better again.  Your body will feel and possibly look different, but you’ll still be the same person.
