Many people have heard of hormone replacement therapy and if you have, the idea may scare you, as it should. We should be leery of anything that messes with our natural body’s makeup. Unfortunately HRT may be necessary in order to combat some menopausal symptoms, particularly early menopausal symptoms.
First of all, you need to speak to your doctor if you feel you may be experiencing symptoms of early menopause. Your doctor should do a series of tests to determine if this is the case and then seek treatment appropriately.
If you’re experiencing mood swings, depression, anxiety, aches and pains, vaginal dryness, headaches, weight gain, chronic fatigue and more, you may have entered into early menopause.
Women can go into early menopause in their 20’s or 30’s. If your doctor seems shocked or surprised or you feel he or she is not taking you seriously, you should seek a second opinion. Unfortunately there are still doctors out there who do not feel someone so young may be going through early menopause, but it does happen and is a reality of our world today.
There are a series of hormone tests which can be completed in order to determine if you are in early menopause. If you’re still getting your period, most doctors will recommend that you have your blood levels taken on the 3rd day of your cycle. If you are no longer getting your period, you can be tested at any time.
Hormone levels can fluctuate, so it’s recommended that you get tested more than once, preferably about a month apart.
The reason it’s important to have the hormone tests done is because some women do experience temporary menopause. Temporary menopause can be brought on by post traumatic stress and other emotional problems.
Most medications used to treat early menopause fall into the hormone replacement family. Some oral hormone replacement therapy medications are: Premarin, Estrace, Cenestin, Gynodiol, Ogen, Ortho-Est, Estratab, Menest, Tri-Est, Bi-Est and Estriol.
Estrogen is also available in patches, gels and rings: Estraderm, Climara, Vivelle and Vivelle Dot, Fempatch, Esclim, Alora, Estring, Femring, Estrogel and Estrasorb.
Other forms of estrogen include Estrace Cream, Premarin Cream, Ogen Cream and Vagifem.
Progesterones and Progestins include Provera, Cycrin, generic MPA, Aygestin, Norlutate, Micronor, Prometrium, generic progesterone, Prochieve (formally Crinone) and Mirena.
Combinations of estrogen and progestin are Prempro, Premphase, CombiPatch, FemHRT, Ortho-Prefest, Activella and Climara Pro.
Combinations of estrogen and testosterone are Android-10, methyl testosterone, Estratest, Estratest H.S. and Premarin with methyl testosterone.
Oral contraceptives HRT’s include: NuvaRing, Alesse, Levlite, Ortho Evra, Mircette, Loestrin, Estrostep Fe, Cyclessa, Levlen, Nordette, Lo/Ovral, Desogen, Ortho-Cept, Loestrin, Yasmin, Triphasil, Tri-Levlen, Ortho-Cyclen, Ovcon-35, Brevicon, Modicon, Norethin, Norinyl 1/35, Ortho-Novum 1/35, Demulen 1/35, Ortho-Novum 10/11, Jenest, Ortho-Tri-Cyclen, Ortho-Novum 7/7/7, Tri-Norinyl, Norinyl 1/50, Ortho-Novum 1/50, Ovcon-50, Ovral and Demulen 1/50.
Speak to your doctor regarding the side effects of HRT treatments and any alternative treatments that may be available to you. You may also be asked to make some slight lifestyle modifications and may need to make some dietary changes.
