It’s always important to stay active for our health, but staying physically active during menopause can be particularly helpful to us in fighting off the symptoms of menopause and early menopause.
Early menopause can he combated with physical activity. Start with choosing an activity that’s right for you and fits in with your needs. Choose a physical activity that makes you feel exuberant and happy. Working out or staying physical can release good chemicals in our brain, which makes us feel better.
Make sure you don’t overdo it and choose activities (or several activities) that fit in with your lifestyle. Group activities or finding an activity partner can be a great way to stay motivated. It’s just as important to eat healthy and get enough rest. One of the biggest complaints of menopause is fatigue. Even if you’re getting enough sleep at night, you may still suffer from fatigue, but that doesn’t mean you have to add to it by not getting enough rest.
Sometimes we let our exhaustion slow us down and keep us from doing things we’re interested in or know we should be doing. Staying physically active can actually decrease feelings of exhaustion and sleepiness.
Tips for Staying Active
If you have a short attention span, make sure you keep your interest in staying active and healthy by switching off of activities.
During winter if we live in a climate that gets colder or snowy, we may find it difficult to find the motivation to get outside and take a walk. My suggestion is to do it anyway. You’ll find that once you get out in the snow, you’ll warm up after just a couple of minutes and you’ll stay warm. Make sure you wear a scarf and earmuffs. It may seem dorky or childish, but it makes a huge difference in staying toasty warm when you’re on one of those winter walks.
Another fun activity you can do to stay active is take a dance class or a fitness class. These usually occur about once or twice a week and you can find many options locally. It can be a fun way to get out of the house, be around people and to stay motivated even in bad weather.
Swimming is also an excellent way to stay active no matter what time of year it is. Most gyms offer indoor swimming pools and if you don’t like to swim, you can take a water aerobics class or simply do some effective water walking. Working out in the water can be just as effective if not more effective as working out in plain old air because your body is pushing against the water and so there is more resistance.
You can also stir things up a bit by investing in a workout or yoga video. This can be a way to get more active group style, but without having to leave the comfort of your own home. Of course, if your home does not allow for you to do this, you may be better off taking a class somewhere.
Be more diligent about your housework. Cleaning is an activity that is necessary for most people and it uses a lot of our body muscles and takes energy. Cleaning actually serves more than one purpose, especially if we are trying to stay active. Not to mention, keeping a clean house will also cut down on our stress level, which is something we can do to help our menopausal symptoms.
